My name is Sue and my partner Charlie was diagnosed with cancer eight years ago, and since then I’ve had to take a lot of time off work. I was working for a doctor at the time my partner got his diagnosis, and my boss wouldn’t always let me leave work when I needed to take Charlie to his doctor appointments. Since 2010, he’s had nine surgeries on his left leg, and may need to have a tenth surgery. In my most recent job with the government, I haven’t always been able take time off either because another woman on my team has also had to take FMLA, and if we both needed to use our FMLA at the same time one of us was not actually able to take it.
FMLA is really important and I am so happy I qualified for it, but wouldn’t it be great if there was more to help the people who need to use it, because care- giving is a full- time job. It is really taxing and emotionally straining and stressful to be a caregiver, so this kind of help would be a tremendous relief because there really aren’t a lot of options for people supporting their loved ones suffering from serious health issues.
